My husband, Don C. Hall (author of I SERVED), was a team leader with F/51st Long Range Patrol (Abn.) Inf. in '67-68. F/51st LRP operated in War Zone D. When Don tells me his stories about calling in artillery close in on his team, I was always amazed at how much faith he had in the people who operated those far-away guns. He often called in the artillery almost on top of the team, but knew that the arty guys would be very precise in firing. As long as the coordinates his team gave the arty guys were exact, the artillery rounds would end up exactly where they should: dead center on the enemy! Your artillery brethren saved his team many at time. Thank you! Annette R. Hall, co-author of I SERVED.

What a site. It is delightful and very interesting to find this. I went to the traveling wall memorial in Bellevue, Wa last night, and it sparked me to look up anything on the war. There is a lot. So I searched for 1st/5th,5/4 arty and bingo this site came up. I never in my life thought I would ever find anything like this. Thankyou much sir. Your site is truely a gift to us all. I served in Headquarters service battery from around 3/69 till 11/69. We brought you guys all your goodies including the hot beer every day along with ammo, powder and anything else you needed including all the food. A lot of beer though. You might remember me and my good friend Olvie Washington. He came from Fort Carson in the beginning. If anyone knows of his whereabouts let me know. He was from Tulsa I believe. Olvie was a Cherokee Indian. I was sorry to see him go home, but glad he did. I have a lot of photos to contribute since I saw every LZ and firebase we serviced. I also was in the Fire Support Control Center from October 69 till November 69 in FSCC as an RTO clearing grid squares for New jersey firing and other firebase controls. Anyone remember much of my little story let me know. We all made it and our prayers should go out to every person who lost someone their. I only knew of one who died at the end of my tour in a truck accident. So many vets never were able to readjust, it breaks my heart to hear of it. Cya all soon I hope. PS: Does anyone remember our new TOP Sargeant who arrived around August or September of 69? well I was one guy he wanted to crush. Does that ring a bell. He liked me though in the end, WHEN I WENT HOME. He was really a humble person then. Ha Ha
I was in Hdq Co of 1/61 5th Mech from July 68 to Jan 69. I would love to hear from any one.

This is a great site. A great big thanks to the designers. I was the Bde FA liason officer from Aug 68 until Feb 69. I then commanded Service Battery from Feb until July 69. The men of Service Battery were the greatest I have ever had the honer to serve with. I am very honered to have been their commander for even this breif period of time.
Great work Tommy! I feel good every time I run through your site looking at pictures of places and people I knew back then but dont remember well today. Looking through 2nd. photo album from C Btry. I saw a picture of me (Sgt. Pete and Robbie). I'm on the left, Robbie (I think from another crew or FDC) is in the middle and cant remember the guys name on the right but he was the driver on gun #1 (C10). He was from Pitsburg PA. I worked with the guys in picture (gun crew) on gun #1 (C10) with the California flag. Would apreciate getting in touch with anyone who was with C Btry. 5/4th. between apr. 68 and jul. 69. Tryed to forget and was always thinking about it, now wish I could remember better! Thanks again Tommy and your web site! Peter

We are trying to get the word out about our project and thought perhaps you might be able to help us. Military veterans . . . WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!! Have you ever spent time in a veteran's hospital? This not-for-profit group works to lessen the bleakness that permeates most Veterans Health Administration hospitals. Check out the Kitchen Table Gang Trust at http://taliaferro.net/veterans Many veterans have deemed our efforts worthy of support and we hope you will too. Hand salute!
Reading thru your web-site has brought back a lot of memories. The one thing that I've learned and have reflected on for all these years is that there were a lot of "HEROES",and your web-site HONORS all of them.
Many thanks for this wonderful site. I am looking for anyone who knew my father, Lionel Workman. He was a platoon sergeant in Company D 1/11th 5th Infantry Div(Mech). He was KIA Aug 7, 1969.

Tommy, thanks for the great web site. You have excelled in your endeavors to create a wonderful "gathering place" for us. I was with B Battery, 5/4 Arty at Ft. Carson and shipped out 6 or 7/1968 and my ETS was 4/23/1969 in Ft. Lewis. Based at C-1 in the vicinity of Quang Tri and Dhong Ha, all I can remember is sand, and lots of it. I was in the 6th gun section. Anyone out there from my unit, please contact me. I was wounded and medivaced out on Jan. 22 or 23, 1969. Was on USS Repose for next few weeks then rejoined my unit. Does anyone remember a guy by the name of Stanback. We were on 548s on a mission together. Would like to hear from him.

I retired in 96 as a MAJ, IN and move to Florida. No snow for me. The challenge here is all the white sand, palm trees, etc. Keep up the good work. SHOOT--ROLL--COIL--DIG IN
Korea was another story. 'Nam was another book - it is still being written. Thank you from my heart to your heart!
Tommy, It sure is a good felling to finally see something about us Red Devils. I went over there from Ft.Carson in July of 1968 with the Div. I was with C btry 5th bn 4th arty LZ Sharon Dong Ha, lucky for me I was short when the division left I ets on Nov 2nd of 1968. I was a chart operator and the driver of the FDC track, you might have seen the track I had made a stencil of the Zig Zag man and painted it on both sides of the track in orange paint. I've been looking for a good friend from over there for the last 20yrs. he was a ammo handler, His name was Dale Robson (mud)it was his second tour in the country and from the so. side of Chicago I checked the wall and he was'nt on it. When I got to the States to ets at Ft. Lewis they did'nt have any Red Diamond patches they put a mack v patch on my uniform, it took me 25yrs to find the Red Diamond and get it sewn on there I've got pictures of my track but I don't have a scanner to get them online, hope to in the future. Talk To You Later, Jody Tetu
Tom, I would like to say, I enjoyed Your web site. It brought back alot of Memories. I aslo was in Viet Nam in 1970 & 71. In fact I was on the same fire base , Charlie 2. I was in the 8/4 Artillery B- Battery on the 175 SP's right across the road from you, we probably keep you up at night shooting our fire missions. Lookin at the photo's on your web site brought me back to the same places we passed through you had pictures of and talked about. I'll bet we fought together during Lam Som 719. Again, This is a great web page. If you need a few photo's of FB Charlie 2 ,Khe Shann, Rock Pile or JJ Carroll. I have them and will send them if you want. The Gun Bunny Ed Oleyn

I enjoyed the site. I was was with Charlie 1/11th infantry, r.t.o. for Sgt. J.J. Joiner after Tork (sp?)got killed after the taking of a hill, probably west of Khe Sahn, from the regulars during Lom Son 7/19. Then was r.t.o. for Lt. Johnson, last 2 months - spent it with 101st Airborne. Anybody still out there from Charlie Company? Good web site - nice to see guys from surrounding units are still around.
Thank you Tommy . Terry "Rock" Roderick sent us the access to your website and it has been historically signifigant for us. We lost our brother Jim Schooley in Vietnam, of the P Co., 75th Airborne Division. He was KIA on March 20, 1971, at the battle of Lam Son 719. Your site has provided us with a lot of information we have been searching for, for such a long time. It is comforting to know that the proud and the brave did not lose thenselves to the politics of the times. We loved our brother, and were proud that he chose to serve his country in such a gallant outfit. We understand so much mor now that historically you are putting together the pieces and providing us an opportuntiy to walk through life with our memories of my brother as a truly courageous man who did not lose his life in vain. More importantly, it is a great honor to know the support and loyalty that exist among the Rangers. He would be right there front and center defending his right to be a Ranger. We are sure Jim would have chosen no other way to go. We miss him. Any one who knew him, please contact us so we can learn more about his time in Vietnam. Thank you for the opportuntiy to see the men my brother fought with and was so proud to serve in the armed forces during the Vietnam War.
Tommy, I served under Captain Blunt D-1/11 From November 1, 1969 thru October 24, 1970. I was on Top of FSB Fuller during that 43 day seize. I am in the process of reconstructing battlefield (firefights) events. I am under GIS (Geographic Information Systems) mapping software. I constuct databases and plot them spatially using locations. I am missing two piece of informations First, I need a report called "After Action Report" for operation "Dakota Clint". Secondly Colonel Jack has a list of all KIA's from the Fifth during '68-'71. I need to find out what unit those KIA's belong to? One example is Boise, Richard Howard belonged to D-1/11. How can I match the KIA with company size unit? Can you help in any way. I have checked all the NARA record groups and none break it down that fine? Philip Bienvenue
I enjoyed your site. Thanks for signing my guest book. Bill

Superb site! I was with Bravo Company, 1/77th Armor, '69-'70.
I found this wb page most exciting, and very interesting to read. I thank you for having this available to us who love the 5th Infantry Div. (Mech.) I was drafted into the US ARMY on the 22 November of 1967, was sent from Fort Dix, New Jersey right to Fort Carson, Colorado. My basic unit was HHC, 4/12TH CAV. Then I was assigned to the 5th AG School of ADMIN. upon graduation I became the Company Clerk of the School. After the school had trained enought clerks, the school was shut down. I was then assigned to the lst Bde Chapel has a Chaplain's Assistant under three Chaplains. Then in my last six months I was a Company Clerk for the new unit called the 615th Engr. Company. I hold dear my days at Fort Carson from 1965 to 1967. Would like to hear from anyone who was stationed at the base in those days. You can directly reached me at 24 Chautauqua Avenue in Jamestown, New York 14701. To all the mighty Red Devils... God Bless.
Great site, had a brother to serve in the 5th from approximately August 1969 to July 1970. Do not know the unit that he was in, but he was in a 155 sp Battery and was a SSG at that time. His name is Earl C. Sealey. Retired in 1988???? but passed away in April of 1991.

Nice site. I served in svc btry LZ Sharon 68. Sure was muddy at the camp entrance. I loved the view on the mountainside at night when the cobras were cutting up the vc. How about that under ground enemy hospital outside of camp RED DEVIL? what a great honor to have served with you all.
I just have to say that this is a tremendous site. I am currently an Army Captain stationed at Fort Hood. Nothing makes me prouder than to see sites like this which are constant reminders of how our brave soldiers during Vietnam have paved the way for our soldiers today! *I am trying to locate Edwardo Rivera. He went by the nickname Sonny. I don't what unit he was in. But he was stationed at Fort Carson in the late 60's, left and came back to Fort Carson in the early 70's. I promised my mom I would do everything I could to locate him. If anybody knows anything, please e-mail me. Take care and God Bless everyone! Sandy
Great site guys! Wonder if anyone can help me with a little information. I would like to know what battery was located on C-2 in Jan 1971. Tommy, Thanks , I was assigned to HHC 1/5th Inf. Mech.,but,I worked in the sensor platoon, and worked at LZ Sharon, Con Thein, Dong Ha, and back at Quang Tri. I was there in 69-70. Christmas 69 and New Year 70 I was at Con Thien. That year everyone was setting off red, green, and white pop-up flares to celebrate, I walked up on top of the hill over the TOC to watch. I looked south, and as far as I could see it looked like little islands in a sea of black--all the firebases,C-2 ,C-3,Dong Ha, Quang Tri, etc., all lit up,with that red, green, and white flares. Then I turned and looked North--what I saw was one of the blackest blacks I ever saw in my life,-not even a spark of light in that direction. It really sunk in to where I was at, one and a half miles from the DMZ. I remember swapping C-rations for Lurp-rations with the Rangers there at Con Thein, and them giving us c-4 to cook with. I remember the mud coming upto my knees there, and the tanks pulling the armored personell carriers thru it because it was to deep for them to make it thru on thier own. We all would help each other out like that-just like famly. Today or yesterday was anyway,it`s Sunday morning-now,is/was Veterans Day. I thank the Good Lord that we made it home, and I know we will not forget those that didn`t. bengallion@hotmail.com

The Bn. F.D.C. talked to a lot of you. Remember Damp Shaker 85? The best fire mission I ever called in was when the new Jersey did a job for us in the DMZ. We had a bunker complex that the 8" howitzers couldn't touch. I understand the New Jersey 16" delayed rounds did some penetration. We started in Dong Ha at the 26th. Marines Compound. The move to Camp Red Devil was a big thing.
I went over with the Brigade. Headquarters Battery, Survey Section. The first lpace we stayed was LZ Sharon. Found a job in F.D.C. I built the big Bunker that was F.D.C. at Camp Red Devil, outside of Quang Tri

I served with a garrison element supporting the 5th Infantry Division (M) at Fort Polk, Louisiana from August 1989 to December 1991. Later, I was assigned to the division's headquarters company. I am looking for a link to any division web pages which perhaps have a search engine for veterans of the 5th. I suspect my grandfather served with the 5th during WWI. Please e-mail me if you have any information. Stewart Brouillette
Great site have been looking for something like this for a long time. It's nice to see so many from the 5th in one place.I was in country from Oct69/Oct70,was in B 5/4 in LZ Sandy(Hai Lang) then Dong Ha.Use to hang out at the gate shack with Dan Nino.Went to A Co 1/61 as RTO for the Fo 12/69 and then to Recon 1/61 in 4/70 to do the job myself.Didn't stay long was hit in May and that ended my field time.Welcome home,it's been a long time.

Great Site! I Commanded C-1-11 Inf from MAR 68 - JAN 69. Our FO was Lt Steve Havenor, and without his professionalism, and the umbrella of artillery fire provided by the 5-4 Arty we would have had much rougher times then we did! Thanks to all who kept us safe during our nature walks in the jungle. If anyone has any information about Steve, I'd sure appreciate finding out where he is. We are going to have a 1-11 Inf Reunion at Fort Benning from 1 - 3 SEP, and we would sure love to have any 5-4 guy's there with us. Take care and GOD BLESS, Fondly, JOHN K. MIDDAUGH

I was with A/1/82 in 70 - 71. We shared LZ Vandergrift with B/5/4 during Lam Son 719. Anyone remember LZ Elliot? We lost our only KIA there and B/5/4 made a number of hip shoots at that place later. Great site. I am just setting up one for 1/82 and invite any one to visit.
Just looking.
You have a great site !
This is a wonderful site and enjoyed going through the photos. I looked at the A Btry Photos and brought back memories that I have not had for a long time. Hope to see more of us who served on this site.
A long time fan of this special forces unit.
Enjoyed your site. Brought back a lot of memories. I knew Dave Sullivan in college at Carroll College in Helena, Montana. He was one of the good guys! Spent my time in Nam with the 196th Inf Bde in Danang until they stood down (Jun '72), then with the Log Support Activity in Nha Trang until we turned the lights out on the war (Mar '73). Keep up the GREAT work! Mike
Great site. Enjoyed the pictures. The photo of the mine damaged jeep reminded me of PFC Tripp, who was 1st KIA of B 1/61, November 1968. I am glad you had the time and vision to take pictures.

Came into country Dec.69, Quang Tri/ Dong Ha, as an APC driver, ground reconnaissance squadron with 3/5 Cav."Black Knights" attached to the 1st Brigade of the 5th Infantry Division(Mechanized)C Company, detached from 9th Infantry Division.Spent much time out in the field and much time up at FSB Charlie Deuce & Alpha Four, riding shotgun for fire support trains. Left Vietnam Feb. 71, always at Quang Tri / Dong Ha. 100% disabled T&P PTSD, life is censored, Vietnam was an event that affects me through personal exposure that I will never forget. Made some great acquaintances through participation in the field & motor pool. But as life has it I suffer from emotional & mental disorders and just never seem to remember anyones name, just faces. I Welcome Home all that made it & will always remember those that I knew that did not make it back to "The world". I also thank you Tom for this web page, it is truly a great thing to go back to now & then.

Hey, Great Website!! i was in the Marines for 6 years and worked with the 5th battalion 11th Marines Arty unit :) I miss the good old days.
To my father Tommy Dorris, Dad the site looks great. You as always make me proud for who you are and what you have done and been through, and came out a better person
Tommy, Your interest in your fellow Veteran shines throughout your entire web site. We "Red Devils" may have been a small contingent but because of dedicated men such as Yourself, Jack, the Knight's and others you have provided our brotherhood the ability to renew old friendships and start new ones.I would also like to thank you for following up on veteran's in need.I am honored to have met you all on the net.As you guys taught me: Hang tough, Tom
Tommy, you have a very good and helpful site. It is an honor and privilage to serve and be a member of such a great unit and division. Keep up the good work and may God Bless you and your's.
Tom, What a great job you have done with your web site, it has to make all who have served with the 5th Division proud to have been part of such a great outfit. I know you have put a lot of time and effort into this web site and it shows. Take care and thanks again. I remain .... Your brother forever, Carl
Tommy, You have done a very nice job with your site and it looks great. It is a service to all who served in the 5/4 Arty. The Papa Company Rangers had two guys who were atttached to our Ranger unit as FO's from the 5/4. Steven Printz and Ronald Muehlhauser. I'm sad to report Ron is deceased and we have not been able to find Steve yet. Both of these FO's volunteered to come to our unit and they were treated just like any other Ranger in the compound. They were both fine field soldiers and crazy as censored in the rear, which made them fit in nicely with us. It was a plasure and privilege to serve with them and they were fine representatives for the "Redleg" units they represented. Blue skies and fair winds to all !! Rangers Lead the Way !! Terry Roderick, President, 75th Ranger Regiment Assn www.75thrangers.org
Tommy you are doing an excellent job with your website. We both enjoy it very much. You should be proud. And yes I was tugging just a little hard on the quilt. But it couldn't have gone to a better brother.
Tommy let me tell you that it is a honor to be able to sign your guess book. Everone who went to Vietnam and had anything to do with the 5/4 Arty ought to know that it was a subperb artillery unit, one of the best.
You have done an excellent job with this site and the help that you are providing with your database. I didn't realize I had been communicating with a fellow Texan. I know TJ was thrilled to see this site take shape and also thinks you have done a fantastic job. God Bless, Linda
It is an honor to be the first one to sign your guest book. You have an outstanding site. You have every right to be proud of your unit and of the contributions you have made to it. I salute you and your work. Hang tough.
